European Officials Warn of Imminent US Attack on Tehran Amid Iran Protests

The US withdraws some personnel from Middle East bases as a precaution; Trump monitors the Iran crackdown and hints at intervention if executions resume.

The United States is reportedly preparing for a possible military strike on Iran, with European officials warning that action could come within 24 hours. This comes amid the worst anti-government protests in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene on behalf of protesters. Tehran, in response, has warned neighboring countries that American bases could be targeted if Washington acts. The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the escalating crisis.

A US official said some personnel are being withdrawn from key Middle East bases as a precaution. Western military sources described signals of an imminent US attack but noted that unpredictability is part of Washington’s strategy. Trump, however, suggested a wait-and-see approach, citing reports that killings in the crackdown were subsiding. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated there are no plans for executions. The Norway-based Iran Human Rights Society reports that hangings remain common in Iranian prisons.

European and Israeli officials indicate that US intervention could occur quickly, though the exact scope remains unclear. Qatar confirmed partial drawdowns at Al Udeid Air Base due to regional tensions. Some personnel were told to leave, but there were no large-scale troop movements as seen during previous confrontations. Britain is also withdrawing staff from its airbase in Qatar. These measures aim to reduce risk to foreign forces amid heightened uncertainty.

Iranian authorities blame foreign powers, including the US and Israel, for instigating unrest. Reports indicate that over 2,400 protesters have died, with some estimates exceeding 2,600. The demonstrations began over economic conditions and quickly escalated into nationwide anti-government protests. Despite the scale of unrest, Western officials say the Iranian government is not near collapse. Security forces remain largely in control, and state media continues to project public support for the regime.

The US has openly threatened strong action if protesters are executed, urging Iranians to continue demonstrations. Tehran has asked regional allies, from Saudi Arabia to Turkey, to prevent US attacks. Direct diplomatic contacts between Iran and the US have been suspended. The unrest coincides with economic and military setbacks for Iran in the region. Meanwhile, international attention remains focused on how both sides will navigate the growing crisis.
