Environment Minister Defends Aravalli Protection Plan and Blames Congress for Past Illegal Mining

Bhupender Yadav reaffirms commitment to Aravalli protection, blames Congress for past illegal mining.

Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav has reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the Aravalli range, rejecting claims that mining safeguards are being diluted. In an interview with IANS, Yadav emphasized that the Supreme Court has endorsed a scientific and sustainable approach to managing the Aravallis, with strict measures against illegal mining.

Yadav clarified that the government is not permitting any new mining until a comprehensive management plan is prepared by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). This plan will identify Aravalli hills, assess eco-sensitivity, and define zones where sustainable mining could be considered, ensuring nearly 90% of the range remains fully protected.

Addressing claims of mining up to 100-metre-high hills, Yadav explained that the process focuses on identifying the geological structure from the lowest ground level upwards, not merely hill height. Protected areas will continue to be off-limits, with sustainable practices implemented only where appropriate.

The minister also contrasted current measures with the Congress era, noting extensive illegal mining at that time, which prompted petitions to the Supreme Court. He highlighted that the court has now mandated sustainable, eco-friendly, and scientifically backed measures for mining and Aravalli conservation.

Responding to rumors about exclusion of certain areas like Chittorgarh and Madhopur, Yadav assured that no part of the Aravallis is being left out. He criticized politically motivated misinformation, suggesting opposition parties are attempting to create confusion, but public awareness of the government’s genuine efforts has grown.

Yadav concluded that the focus is on protecting the environment, ensuring sustainable development, and stopping illegal exploitation. He dismissed claims of foreign funding or NGO interference, asserting that the government is acting transparently and in accordance with Supreme Court directives to safeguard one of India’s most critical ecological regions.
