Emergency Ride Turns Deadly as Ambulance Hits Scooter at Red Light, Couple Killed

Speeding ambulance in Bengaluru crashes into motorcycles at red light, killing a couple on the spot.

A tragic irony unfolded late Saturday night in Bengaluru when an ambulance—rushing to save a life—became the instrument of death, killing a couple on a scooter and injuring two others. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. near Richmond Circle, a busy intersection, where several two-wheelers were lawfully stopped at a red signal. The speeding emergency vehicle lost control, rear-ended multiple motorcycles, and dragged one for several meters before crashing into a police outpost.

The victims, identified as 40-year-old Ismail and his wife Sameen Banu, were riding a Honda Dio scooter when the ambulance struck them with devastating force. Both died instantly from the impact. Two other riders sustained severe injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos, with shattered bikes scattered across the road and the ambulance wedged against the outpost.

Viral video footage captured the aftermath: bystanders, in a desperate collective effort, lifted the heavy ambulance to free trapped victims and clear the wreckage. Damaged motorcycles, twisted metal, and a stunned crowd filled the frame as emergency responders arrived. The Wilson Garden Traffic Police quickly cordoned off the area, conducted a preliminary inspection, and registered an FIR against the driver.

The ambulance driver, identified as Ashok, has been taken into police custody as investigations focus on speed, signal violation, and possible negligence. Authorities are examining whether the emergency siren was active, if the patient onboard required such urgency, and why the vehicle failed to brake at the red light. The incident has reignited public outrage over reckless driving—even by emergency services—and calls for stricter protocols to prevent such preventable tragedies.

As Bengaluru mourns Ismail and Sameen Banu, the crash serves as a grim reminder that the very symbols of hope and rescue can turn deadly when speed overrides safety. The police probe continues, with justice now the only ambulance the grieving families seek.
