Electric Car Catches Fire Near Hyderabad’s NTR Stadium, Blaze Controlled With No Injuries

An electric car erupts in flames near Hyderabad’s NTR Stadium; the blaze is contained, and officials confirm no casualties.

A sudden and intense fire engulfed an electric car parked near NTR Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon, sparking widespread panic in the bustling Ameerpet area. The blaze, reported around 3 PM on November 16, 2025, originated from the vehicle's battery compartment, rapidly spreading to consume the entire car in flames and thick black smoke. Eyewitnesses captured dramatic videos showing the EV ablaze as passersby scrambled to safety, with the incident quickly going viral on social media platforms. Firefighters arrived promptly, battling the inferno with specialized foam to combat the lithium-ion battery's thermal runaway, a phenomenon that makes EV fires notoriously difficult to extinguish.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Telangana Fire Services, Gandhi Nagar traffic police, and Domalaguda police, coordinated swiftly to secure the scene and manage traffic disruptions. The area was cordoned off to prevent secondary accidents, and vehicle flow was restored within an hour after the flames were fully subdued. No casualties or injuries were reported, with damage confined to the electric vehicle itself, which was left as a charred wreck. Officials praised the quick containment, attributing it to improved urban firefighting protocols in Hyderabad, though the incident disrupted local commuters during peak evening hours.

Preliminary investigations point to a potential battery malfunction as the cause, possibly triggered by overheating, a manufacturing defect, or exposure to recent rainfall causing electrical shorts. Forensic experts are examining the wreckage for clues, including any onboard diagnostic data, while the Regional Transport Office (RTO) collaborates to trace the vehicle's history and maintenance records. This marks the third EV fire in Hyderabad in 2025, following similar incidents involving electric scooters, raising fresh concerns about battery safety standards amid India's aggressive push toward electric mobility with over 1.5 million units sold this year.

The event has reignited public debate on EV infrastructure and safety, with experts calling for mandatory thermal imaging at charging stations and stricter certification for imported battery packs. The Electric Vehicle Manufacturers Association has assured full cooperation in the probe, emphasising that such fires remain statistically rare compared to the vast mileage covered by EVs nationwide. Hyderabad authorities are planning awareness drives on emergency protocols for lithium-ion incidents, including the use of Class D extinguishers.

In a separate development underscoring urban vulnerabilities, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar warned of escalating cyber fraud on Saturday, revealing scammers impersonated him on social media to swindle Rs 20,000 from a friend under the guise of an emergency. Urging direct verification for any monetary requests, Sajjanar highlighted the growing sophistication of digital crimes targeting public figures' networks. As Hyderabad navigates these dual challenges of technological adoption and security, enhanced vigilance remains key to safeguarding its residents.
