Elderly Man's Medical Crisis Exposed Delhi Metro's Toilet Access Gap at Kalkaji Station

An elderly commuter's medical emergency at the Kalkaji Metro station ignites debate over public toilet accessibility and civic conduct.

A video showing an elderly man urinating inside a lift at Delhi’s Kalkaji Metro Station has triggered widespread outrage on social media, prompting responses from both the Delhi Police and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The incident, which reportedly took place on May 15 at around 9:40 PM, gained attention after Instagram user Deepshika Mehta shared footage and details of the encounter online. The clip quickly went viral, sparking debate over civic sense, public hygiene, and passenger safety within the Delhi Metro network.

According to Mehta, she and another woman entered the metro lift and found the man allegedly urinating inside it. She later confronted him on the platform, where he reportedly responded dismissively by saying, “Tum karlo jo karna hai,” meaning “Do what you want.” In her social media post, Mehta described the incident as deeply uncomfortable and said no commuter should feel unsafe while using public transport facilities. The video drew millions of views and prompted strong reactions from users across platforms.

Following the online backlash, Delhi Police issued a clarification in the comment section of the viral post, stating that the elderly man was allegedly facing a medical emergency at the time of the incident. According to police, the man had been travelling from Jamia Metro Station to Faridabad and was changing trains at Kalkaji Metro Station when he reportedly struggled to locate a nearby toilet facility. Officials said the situation became uncontrollable, leading him to urinate into a bottle while inside the lift.

Police added that passengers objected to the act and alerted metro staff, after which action was taken by authorities. The DMRC later penalised the man under Section 59 of the DMRC Act for creating a nuisance inside metro premises. While the identity of the elderly passenger was not disclosed, metro authorities confirmed that appropriate measures had been taken. The DMRC also appealed to commuters to cooperate in maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and discipline across the Delhi Metro network.

The incident has reignited conversations around the availability and accessibility of public toilets at metro stations, especially during late-night hours and busy interchange operations. Several social media users argued that although the act was inappropriate, the reported medical emergency and difficulty in locating washroom facilities highlighted a larger infrastructure issue. Some commuters claimed that toilets at certain stations are either difficult to find quickly or remain locked during late operating hours, causing inconvenience to elderly passengers and those with medical conditions.

In a follow-up statement shared online, Mehta said her intention was not merely to shame the individual but to raise awareness about civic behaviour and public safety. She stressed that even during emergencies, people should try to maintain basic public etiquette. She also suggested greater awareness around adult diapers and similar medical support products for elderly individuals facing health-related issues while travelling. The episode has since become a wider talking point on balancing empathy for medical emergencies with the need to ensure cleanliness and safety in public spaces.
