Eight Killed In Salem As TNSTC Bus Hits Tempo And Two-Wheeler

Eight killed in Salem crash involving TNSTC bus, tempo and two-wheeler

Eight people have been killed after a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus crashed into a tempo and a two‑wheeler near Salem, triggering a multi‑vehicle collision on a busy road stretch. The accident occurred in the early morning hours at the Uthamachozhapuram area on the outskirts of Salem, where the bus was travelling with dozens of passengers onboard.

According to preliminary reports, the TNSTC bus suddenly veered off course and smashed into a tempo and a two‑wheeler moving along the roadside, throwing the smaller vehicles into the path ahead. The impact was severe enough to fatally injure eight persons at the spot, including at least two children, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the Government Hospital in Salem for treatment.

Eyewitnesses and local media say the bus was speeding and appeared to lose control before the crash, though the exact cause—be it driver error, mechanical failure or road conditions—is still under investigation. Police have cordoned off the area, collected CCTV footage from nearby cameras, and registered a case to probe the incident, while also checking the bus driver’s documents and medical fitness.

The accident has triggered fresh concern about road‑safety and public‑transport discipline in and around Salem, where TNSTC buses form a major part of daily commuting. Local residents and civic‑safety advocates are demanding stricter monitoring of speed limits, better driver‑training practices and more frequent safety audits for government buses, especially on high‑traffic stretches near urban outskirts.

Compensation and medical‑support arrangements have begun, with local authorities coordinating with the transport corporation to provide assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured. The tragedy also underscores the vulnerability of tempo and two‑wheeler users when struck by heavier vehicles, prompting calls for wider implementation of segregated lanes and stricter enforcement of traffic rules along the Salem–Uthamachozhapuram corridor.
