ED Raids Linked to Veena Vijayan Trigger Political Debate in Kerala CPI-M
ED raids reignite debate over CPI-M’s differing political responses.
The Enforcement Directorate’s ongoing investigation into the alleged CMRL-Exalogic financial transactions involving T. Veena, daughter of former Kerala Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan, has triggered a fresh political controversy in Kerala. The case has reignited accusations from critics and opposition parties that the CPI-M follows different standards when allegations involve family members of influential party leaders. The debate has once again placed the ruling Left party under intense political scrutiny as investigators continue to widen the scope of the probe across Kerala and Bengaluru.
The controversy has drawn comparisons with the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation in 2020 against Bineesh Kodiyeri, son of former CPI-M state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. At that time, the CPI-M leadership had publicly maintained distance from the allegations and stressed that the law should take its course without political interference. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had then stated that his son was not a public worker and that strict punishment should follow if any wrongdoing was established. The party leadership had projected the matter as a personal legal issue unrelated to the CPI-M’s political functioning or organisational activities.
Pinarayi Vijayan, who was serving as Kerala Chief Minister during the Bineesh Kodiyeri investigation, had also adopted a measured stance while responding to the controversy. He had stated that no conclusions could be drawn until the investigating agency presented evidence and clarified that the concerned family would handle any legal proceedings. However, the CPI-M’s response in the present case involving Veena Vijayan has been notably different. Following the recent Enforcement Directorate raids at locations linked to Veena and Exalogic Solutions, party workers launched protests, emergency meetings were organised, and senior leaders strongly criticised the central agency’s actions.

CPI-M state Secretary M.V. Govindan accused the Enforcement Directorate of carrying out a politically motivated campaign aimed at weakening both Pinarayi Vijayan and the CPI-M. According to party leaders, the agency’s actions are part of a broader attempt by political opponents to target the Left leadership in Kerala. The political debate intensified further after Bineesh Kodiyeri himself joined CPI-M workers protesting outside Vijayan’s residence during the raids. Speaking to the media, Bineesh said Pinarayi Vijayan’s family was also part of his political family and added that the situation demanded unity rather than revisiting past reactions to legal troubles faced by party members.
The Enforcement Directorate has reportedly frozen around Rs 18.36 crore across 242 bank accounts connected to the case. Investigators have also seized digital evidence, financial documents, and Veena Vijayan’s mobile phone during coordinated raids conducted in Kerala and Bengaluru. The probe is focused on alleged financial dealings between Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) and Exalogic Solutions, though officials have not publicly disclosed the complete findings of the investigation. The developments have intensified political confrontation in Kerala, with opposition parties demanding greater transparency and accountability from the CPI-M leadership.
The controversy has also revived discussions regarding Bineesh Kodiyeri’s position within the CPI-M after his acquittal by the Karnataka High Court in 2023. Despite being cleared in the case, his repeated requests for restoration of party membership have reportedly not been accepted by the state leadership. Critics argue that the differing treatment in the two cases reflects inconsistency in the party’s approach toward allegations involving relatives of senior leaders. Meanwhile, CPI-M leaders continue to reject the accusations and maintain that the Enforcement Directorate’s actions are politically driven attempts to damage the party’s image ahead of future political contests in the state.
