ED Raids George Soros’ OSF and Linked Entities in Bengaluru
ED Searches George Soros’ OSF and Linked Entities in Bengaluru Over Forex Violations
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched searches on Tuesday at the premises of George Soros-backed Open Society Foundations (OSF) and related entities in Bengaluru, probing alleged foreign exchange violations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Official sources confirmed the operation targets OSF and certain international human rights organizations linked to it, focusing on suspected irregularities in foreign direct investment (FDI) sourcing and utilization that contravene FEMA guidelines.
The case spotlights OSF, founded by the Hungarian-American billionaire and activist George Soros, which has operated in India since 1999, supporting civil society initiatives in human rights, justice, and public health. The ED’s move follows long-standing accusations from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has branded Soros and OSF as anti-India forces, notably during the Adani-Hindenburg controversy when his remarks drew sharp rebuke from party leaders like Smriti Irani.
OSF could not be reached for comment. The searches mark a significant escalation in scrutiny of foreign-funded entities, amid India’s tightened oversight of NGOs under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Further details on the investigation are awaited as it unfolds.
