ED Arrests Gujarat Samachar Owner Bahubali Shah

ED Swoops on Gujarat Samachar Owner in Dramatic Raid: Political Vendetta or Financial Probe?

In a high-stakes move, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained Bahubali Shah, co-owner of Gujarat Samachar, one of Gujarat’s most influential newspapers, following a raid on the publication’s premises in Ahmedabad.

Shah, a director of Lok Prakashan Limited, which publishes the daily, was taken into custody early Friday, sources confirmed. His brother, Shreyansh Shah, serves as the managing editor of the 93-year-old newspaper known for its bold anti-establishment stance.

Tushar Dave, head of digital services at GSTV, a news channel owned by Shreyansh, revealed that Bahubali Shah’s health deteriorated post-detention, leading to his admission to Zydus Hospital after a brief stop at VS Hospital.

The ED has remained tight-lipped about the reasons for the detention, fueling speculation. The raid followed a 36-hour search by the Income Tax department at GSTV’s offices, with ED officials swooping in Thursday evening, Dave noted on social media.

The action has sparked controversy, with Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani alleging the Shah brothers are being targeted for Gujarat Samachar’s critical reporting on the central government over the past 25 years.

Some social media posts echo this, claiming the newspaper’s coverage of India-Pakistan tensions may have drawn ire, while others allege financial fraud linked to a 2016 SEBI case. As the investigation unfolds, the detention raises questions about press freedom and political motives in Gujarat’s charged media landscape.
