ECI Reports Rs 510 Crore Seizure Of Cash, Liquor And Freebies In Bengal Polls

ECI intensifies surveillance in Bengal polls, seizing Rs 510 crore in cash, liquor and freebies.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on April 27 said that enforcement agencies have seized cash, liquor, drugs, precious metals and other inducement materials worth over ₹510.10 crore in West Bengal ahead of the final phase of Assembly elections, scheduled for April 29.

According to official data shared by the poll body, the seizures have been made by flying squads and security agencies deployed across the state since the announcement of elections on March 15. The ECI said the total value of confiscated items has already crossed the ₹339 crore mark recorded during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, indicating a significant increase in enforcement activity this cycle.

The breakdown of seizures includes approximately ₹30 crore in cash, liquor worth ₹126.85 crore, narcotics valued at ₹110.12 crore, precious metals worth ₹58.28 crore, and other inducement-related freebies amounting to ₹184.85 crore. Authorities said these measures are part of efforts to curb voter inducement and ensure free and fair elections.

To strengthen surveillance, the ECI has deployed more than 2,728 Flying Squad Teams (FSTs) across the state. These teams are tasked with responding to complaints related to illegal inducements within 100 minutes. In addition, 3,142 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs) have been positioned at strategic points to conduct surprise checks and monitor suspicious movement.

Officials said special enforcement drives are also being conducted to crack down on the illegal manufacture, storage, and distribution of liquor and other banned materials. The Election Seizure Management System (ESMS), activated on February 26, continues to be used to track violations and enforce the Model Code of Conduct during the election period.

Ahead of voting in 142 constituencies, the ECI has further enhanced security measures by expanding CCTV surveillance beyond polling stations. Authorities confirmed that cameras are now being installed along approach roads to hypersensitive polling booths to prevent voter intimidation and ensure transparent access for electors. The polling for the second and final phase is set to take place on April 29, while the results for all 294 West Bengal Assembly seats will be declared on May 4.
