EAM Jaishankar Highlights Major Transformation In India’s Foreign Policy Under PM Modi

Jaishankar highlights major reforms making India more globally connected.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday said that India’s foreign policy and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have undergone a significant transformation over the past 12 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the changes have strengthened India’s global engagement and improved services for citizens travelling and living abroad.

Highlighting key reforms, Jaishankar noted that passport issuance and document attestation processes have become more streamlined and citizen-friendly in recent years. He said the government has focused on making consular services more accessible, reducing delays and improving efficiency through digital platforms. According to him, these improvements have contributed to a more seamless experience for Indians travelling overseas.

The External Affairs Minister also emphasised the government’s efforts to support Indian nationals during international crises. He pointed to large-scale evacuation operations carried out in conflict zones such as Ukraine, Afghanistan, Sudan and Israel, where Indian embassies played a crucial role in assisting citizens. He said these responses demonstrated the MEA’s expanded capacity to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.

Jaishankar further stated that India has strengthened its global workforce mobility through international agreements, with 21 mobility partnerships signed to date. He added that Indian businesses have been supported in expanding access to foreign markets, helping boost exports and global competitiveness. The government, he said, has also worked to promote Indian culture abroad and deepen appreciation of India’s heritage and traditions.

In a post on X, the External Affairs Minister said the government has opened 44 new embassies and consulates to better serve the needs of Indians living and working abroad. He highlighted initiatives aimed at supporting Indian students overseas and expanding welfare measures through the Indian Community Welfare Fund. Jaishankar said the MEA now operates around the clock to ensure the safety and interests of Indian citizens across the world.

The statement comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to complete 12 years in office on June 10, marking a milestone in his tenure as one of India’s longest-serving elected leaders. Having taken office in 2014 and securing successive mandates in 2019 and 2024, Modi is set to surpass India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in total days served. Officials said the period has been marked by expanded diplomatic outreach and increased global visibility for India.
