EAM Jaishankar Discusses West Asia Crisis, Bilateral Ties With Indonesian Counterpart

EAM Jaishankar talks West Asia conflict, bilateral cooperation with Indonesian counterpart Sugiono.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with his Indonesian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sugiono, on Thursday, discussing the ongoing conflict in West Asia and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The ministers also agreed to convene a Joint Commission meeting at an early date, according to a post by Jaishankar on X.

The discussion comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia following joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, which prompted retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran targeting U.S. assets, regional capitals, and allied forces. India has maintained active diplomatic engagement with multiple nations to monitor developments and promote de-escalation.

In recent days, Jaishankar has also spoken with his counterparts from Russia, Iran, France, Germany, South Korea, and the European Union. On Wednesday, he held a conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, exchanging assessments on the West Asia conflict and reviewing bilateral cooperation. Similarly, he spoke with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to discuss the conflict and its regional implications.

Jaishankar’s discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday focused on the latest developments in the ongoing crisis, with both sides agreeing to remain in touch. He also spoke to South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun about bilateral ties and the situation in West Asia, including its impact on energy security.

India has consistently advocated for restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy as the preferred path forward while emphasizing the protection of Indian nationals in the region and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies. Jaishankar’s outreach reflects India’s proactive diplomatic approach to navigating the complex security situation in West Asia while maintaining strong bilateral relations across multiple regions.

These conversations underscore India’s efforts to coordinate with global partners, manage regional tensions, and reinforce its commitment to both national interests and international stability. The Joint Commission meeting with Indonesia is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and strategic engagement.
