E-KYC Mandatory For 2.25 Crore Women Beneficiaries

Two-month deadline set for beneficiaries to complete e-KYC.

In a significant move to streamline the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, the Maharashtra government has mandated e-KYC verification for all beneficiaries, setting a strict two-month deadline to complete the process. The decision, formalized through a government resolution (GR) issued on Thursday, aims to ensure transparency and curb misuse of the scheme, which provides Rs 1,500 monthly assistance to women aged 21–65 with an annual family income below Rs 2.5 lakh.

Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare announced the new requirement, urging beneficiaries to visit the scheme’s web portal, ladakibahin.maharashtra.gov.in, to complete the e-KYC process. “This simple and user-friendly step is crucial for ensuring uninterrupted benefits and maintaining the scheme’s integrity,” Tatkare said in a post on X. She highlighted that the verification would also facilitate access to other government schemes in the future, making it a vital step for eligible women.

The GR emphasizes that failure to complete e-KYC and Aadhaar authentication within the stipulated two months will result in the withholding of monthly payments. Additionally, beneficiaries will be required to renew their e-KYC annually to continue receiving funds. The move comes in the wake of revelations that approximately 26.34 lakh ineligible individuals, including men, had enrolled and received payments under the scheme, which was launched in July 2024 to empower women financially.

With 2.25 crore women currently benefiting from the scheme, the government is intensifying efforts to weed out fraudulent claims and ensure aid reaches only eligible recipients. The e-KYC mandate has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the push for transparency, while others express concerns about accessibility for rural beneficiaries. As the deadline looms, authorities are ramping up awareness campaigns to assist women in completing the process seamlessly.
