Dubai Airport Under Threat: Iran Missile Alert Forces Passengers Into Shelters, Flights Put on Hold

Air raid sirens at Dubai airport forced passengers and staff into shelters amid the Iranian missile threat.

Air raid sirens sounded briefly at Dubai International Airport on the morning of March 10, 2026, prompting passengers and staff to be directed to bomb shelters as UAE air defences detected incoming missiles and drones attributed to Iran. A video captured by a passenger inside the terminal showed crowds moving toward designated shelters while dozens of check-in counters stood deserted, indicating that airline personnel had also been evacuated for safety.

Similar sirens were reported at Bahrain International Airport during the same alert period. The incident reflects heightened regional tensions amid the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which has seen retaliatory Iranian drone and missile launches targeting Gulf states and infrastructure. Flight tracking data indicated that all incoming flights to Dubai were placed in holding patterns near Fujairah and Al-Ain, approximately 111 to 134 kilometers from the airport, while operations were paused temporarily.

The United Arab Emirates, along with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, reported intercepting and destroying multiple drones during the alert. Saudi and Kuwaiti forces confirmed downing a total of eight drones, including two aimed at oil facilities in Saudi Arabia's eastern region. This follows a previous incident last week when Iranian drones targeted the Ras Tanura refinery, underscoring the vulnerability of energy infrastructure in the Gulf to the widening conflict.

The episode at Dubai airport echoes a separate disruption on Saturday, when flight operations were briefly suspended after a drone was intercepted and crashed near one of the terminals. Video footage from that event, filmed by a witness, showed a large plume of smoke rising close to the airport complex—near Concourse A—following a loud explosion. The clip captured the drone's rapid descent before impact, with the filmer heard exclaiming in shock, "Ya Allah! Straight to the airport!" and "Oh my God, straight to the aircraft," as smoke billowed across the area.

Dubai International Airport, one of the world's busiest aviation hubs, has implemented precautionary measures in response to the regional security situation, including rapid sheltering protocols and coordination with UAE military defences. No casualties or damage to airport infrastructure were reported from the latest alert, though passenger experiences highlighted the anxiety caused by sudden evacuations amid ongoing threats.

The repeated incidents illustrate the spillover effects of the Iran conflict on civilian aviation and daily life in Gulf countries allied with or hosting US and Western interests. Authorities in the UAE and neighboring states continue to monitor airspace closely, with flight disruptions serving as a reminder of the broader risks to commercial travel in the region as military exchanges persist.
