Drone Crash Near Varanasi Station Prompts Security Probe

Suspected content creator’s drone sparks probe at railway hub.

A camera-equipped drone crashed near platform number 7 of Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station, prompting an immediate response from security forces. The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police Force (GRPF), bomb detection squad, and dog squad swiftly cordoned off the area to investigate and ensure no threat was present.

RPF in-charge Sandeep Yadav stated that initial findings suggest the drone was likely used by a content creator filming social media content, such as reels or short videos, though the owner remains unidentified.

The drone, which carried no suspicious payload, was seized by the RPF for further investigation to trace its operator and determine the cause of the crash. The incident has heightened concerns amid Uttar Pradesh’s intensified crackdown on unauthorized drone use, following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

In a recent videoconference, Adityanath ordered stricter enforcement, citing risks of misinformation and public panic. The state has recorded 17 FIRs and 29 arrests for drone-related offenses in recent weeks, with severe penalties, including charges under the Gangsters Act and National Security Act, for misuse.

Districts like Ayodhya, Mathura, and Meerut have imposed blanket bans on drone flights without prior permission, reflecting heightened vigilance to safeguard public security.
