Driver Falls Asleep, Car Plunges 50 Feet Off Ghaziabad Flyover—Father Dead, Son Survives Miracle Escape

A young driver dozes off on Rajnagar flyover, causing fatal crash that kills his father and injures him.

A tragic accident unfolded early Monday on Ghaziabad's Rajnagar flyover when a speeding car broke through the railing and plunged nearly 50 feet into a Public Works Department (PWD) office premises below. The incident, occurring around 3 AM, claimed the life of 48-year-old Rakesh Kumar from Jagriti Vihar, while his son Prince, in his mid-twenties and the driver, sustained injuries but is now out of danger.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Nandgram), Upasna Pandey, confirmed that Prince allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash violently. Both father and son were trapped in the mangled wreckage until police and local residents collaborated on a swift rescue operation. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Rakesh was declared dead on arrival, and his body sent for post-mortem.

The early morning timing amplified the shock, with a loud crash waking nearby residents. Police investigations point to fatigue-induced drowsiness as the primary cause, underscoring the dangers of driving without adequate rest, especially on elevated roads like Rajnagar flyover known for high speeds. No other vehicles were involved, preventing further casualties.

Prince remains under medical observation at Yashoda Hospital, with authorities confirming his stable condition. This incident highlights recurring safety concerns on Ghaziabad's infrastructure, where similar flyover mishaps have occurred, often linked to speeding or driver error.

Local police have initiated a detailed probe, including potential CCTV review, to ascertain exact circumstances and rule out other factors like vehicle defects. The community mourns Rakesh Kumar, a local resident, as authorities emphasize road safety awareness campaigns.
