DRDO Completes Three Ballistic Missile Defence Tests In Two Days, Marks Major Milestone

DRDO completes three missile defence tests in two days

India has successfully conducted a series of advanced missile defence tests over two days, marking what officials describe as a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s ballistic missile defence (BMD) capabilities and placing it among a select group of nations with demonstrated long-range interception capacity.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the flight tests on June 10 and 11, successfully validating multiple intercept scenarios against long-range ballistic missile targets. The achievement includes three consecutive successful interception-related trials, signalling progress in India’s layered missile defence architecture designed to counter high-speed aerial threats.

In addition to the ballistic missile defence trials, DRDO also conducted a maiden successful flight test of a medium-range anti-ship defence system, further expanding India’s maritime strike and interception capabilities. The dual success has been described by defence officials as a major boost to both strategic deterrence and naval security operations.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO on the successful tests, calling them an important step forward in strengthening India’s indigenous defence technology ecosystem. Officials said the results reflect years of development in high-end missile interception systems under the country’s layered BMD programme.

According to sources, two interceptor missiles tested during the trials are capable of engaging and destroying incoming Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) with strike ranges between 2,000 km and 5,000 km. These interceptors are believed to operate in both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric conditions, enabling multi-layered defence coverage against high-altitude and lower-atmosphere threats.

While the systems tested have not been officially named, government sources indicated that they will now move toward extended validation trials following the successful demonstration phase. The results are expected to contribute to further refinement of India’s national missile defence shield, which has been under phased development for several years.

The latest tests come amid increased strategic focus on missile defence technologies globally, as countries invest in countering evolving long-range and hypersonic threats. India’s progress in this domain is seen as part of its broader effort to enhance deterrence capabilities and secure critical infrastructure against aerial attacks.

Officials also noted that work on advanced missile systems has accelerated in recent years, including upgrades to existing platforms and development of next-generation interceptors. The successful trials are expected to feed into ongoing programmes aimed at building a robust, multi-layered defence network capable of responding to a wide spectrum of ballistic and maritime threats.
