Dr Nikhil Tandon To Serve As Interim Director Of AIIMS Delhi Until Regular Appointment

Dr Nikhil Tandon has been assigned to serve as the interim director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi, following the departure of the institute’s previous chief to a key government role.The appointment comes after former director Dr M Srinivas moved to the NITI Aayog as a full-time member, triggering a leadership transition at one of India’s premier medical institutions. Officials confirmed that Dr Tandon will take over the director’s responsibilities with immediate effect.

According to an official memorandum, Dr Tandon—currently the Dean (Academic) and Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism—will handle the additional charge alongside his existing duties. The arrangement has been made under provisions of the AIIMS Rules, 2019, ensuring continuity in administration during the interim period.

The interim appointment is set to remain in place for up to six months or until a full-time director is appointed, whichever is earlier. Authorities indicated that the process to identify a permanent successor is expected to begin shortly, with a search-cum-selection mechanism likely to be initiated.

Dr Tandon is a senior endocrinologist with over two decades of experience in clinical research and public healthcare. He has been associated with AIIMS for much of his career and is known for his work in cardio-metabolic diseases, including diabetes and thyroid disorders.

The transition is seen as a routine administrative step to maintain institutional stability. As AIIMS continues to play a central role in India’s healthcare system, particularly in medical education and research, the interim leadership is expected to ensure smooth functioning until a permanent appointment is finalised.
