Dr Joram Aniya Appointed Full-Time Member Of NITI Aayog By Centre
Dr Joram Aniya becomes Arunachal’s first NITI Aayog member
In a significant development for Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast, Dr Joram Aniya has been appointed as a full-time member of NITI Aayog, marking her entry into one of India’s top policymaking institutions.The appointment was formalised through a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat on Saturday and approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Alongside Dr Aniya, economist Dr R Balasubramaniam has also been named a full-time member of the institution, which plays a key role in shaping national development strategy and cooperative federalism.
Dr Aniya currently serves as the Head of the Department of Hindi at Dera Natung Government College in Itanagar. With over 18 years of experience in teaching, research, and public policy engagement, she is expected to bring an academic and grassroots perspective to the national policy framework. Her work has largely focused on literature, culture, and indigenous knowledge systems.
A notable milestone in her career is her distinction as the first woman from the Nyishi community to earn a PhD, and the first individual from Arunachal Pradesh to complete a doctorate in Hindi. She has contributed extensively to research on Nyishi literature and culture, authoring and editing several books as well as publishing academic papers in related fields.

Her appointment is being viewed as an important recognition of scholarship from India’s Northeast region. Officials and observers say her background in indigenous cultural studies could strengthen discussions on tribal welfare, education reform, and inclusive development policies at the national level.Dr Aniya’s inclusion comes shortly after a broader restructuring of NITI Aayog announced on April 24, which also brought in several prominent figures including Dr Ashok Kumar Lahiri as Vice Chairman, economist Dr KV Raju, AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas, and former Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba. The reshuffle is seen as an effort to diversify expertise within the policy body.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated Dr Aniya, calling her appointment a proud moment for the state and the entire Northeast. He highlighted her contributions to academia and cultural preservation, noting that her work reflects both scholarly excellence and deep community engagement.Her elevation to the national policy stage has been widely welcomed in the state, with many viewing it as a milestone that highlights the growing representation of Northeast India in central governance structures and intellectual institutions.
