Doctors Say Wangchuk's Vitals Stable, Blood Sugar Levels Low

Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk remains under close medical supervision at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, according to the latest health bulletin issued by the hospital. Doctors said his vital signs are stable, but his blood sugar levels continue to remain below the normal range, requiring ongoing monitoring and medical care.

The eighth medical bulletin stated that Wangchuk is being treated by a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from VMMC, Safdarjung Hospital and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition following his prolonged hunger strike, with regular clinical assessments and laboratory investigations being conducted.

According to the hospital, Wangchuk's overnight blood tests showed a serum potassium level of 3.2 mEq/L. The bulletin also noted that he continues to have persistent pancytopenia, including anaemia and reduced white blood cell counts. Medical experts said these abnormalities require continued observation through serial investigations to assess his recovery.

Doctors said Wangchuk is currently receiving oral rehydration therapy and oral potassium supplements. However, he has continued to decline intravenous fluids and glucose despite repeated medical advice. The medical team noted that prolonged fasting, dehydration and ongoing laboratory abnormalities make continued hospital supervision essential.

Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18 after Delhi Police shifted him from Jantar Mantar on the 21st day of his hunger strike. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has stated that no medical treatment should be administered without the consent of the family or the doctors who had monitored him throughout his fast. She has also said that while he remains physically weak, he is alert.

Hospital authorities said Wangchuk's condition continues to be monitored closely and further updates will be provided through subsequent medical bulletins. Doctors have reiterated that maintaining close observation is necessary given his ongoing dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and the physiological effects associated with an extended period of fasting.
