DK Shivakumar To Be Sworn In As Karnataka Chief Minister Today
Congress ushers in leadership change ahead of future battles.
Karnataka is set for a significant political transition as Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar prepares to take oath as the state's new Chief Minister at a ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru. The development marks the culmination of months of speculation and political maneuvering within the Congress party over the leadership of the state government. Shivakumar's elevation comes after a prolonged power-sharing debate that has shaped Karnataka's political landscape since the Congress returned to power in 2023.
The leadership change follows an extended tussle between Shivakumar and outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, with discussions over a possible rotational chief ministership arrangement dominating political discourse for more than a year. Although neither the Congress leadership nor the two senior leaders publicly confirmed such an agreement, supporters of both camps consistently pushed their respective claims. The issue gained renewed momentum after the government completed two years in office, increasing pressure on the party high command to resolve the matter.
According to party sources, the transition has received strong backing from senior Congress leaders at the national level. The leadership reportedly viewed the change as part of a broader political strategy aimed at strengthening the party's position ahead of future electoral challenges. Siddaramaiah, one of Karnataka's most influential political figures, was reportedly offered an opportunity to move to national politics through a Rajya Sabha seat. However, he is understood to have chosen to remain active in state affairs and continue influencing Karnataka's political direction.

Attention has also shifted to the composition of the new ministry, which is expected to be sworn in alongside the Chief Minister. Congress leaders are said to be approaching cabinet formation cautiously, seeking to project the new administration as a fresh start for the state. The party is aware of growing public expectations and is keen to ensure that the transition is viewed as a renewal of governance rather than a continuation of existing challenges.
Sources indicate that Rahul Gandhi has played a key role in shaping the framework of the new government. The Congress leadership is believed to be prioritizing broader representation for Dalits, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and minority communities in the administration. This approach is seen as politically significant, particularly following the departure of Siddaramaiah, who has long been regarded as one of the party's most prominent OBC leaders in Karnataka.
The party is also reportedly considering a multi-deputy chief minister model, with two or three leaders sharing the responsibility. Such an arrangement could include representatives from Dalit and minority communities in senior leadership positions. Political observers believe the structure would help the Congress balance competing interests within the party while reinforcing its commitment to social representation and inclusive governance as the new administration begins its tenure.
