Diplomacy On High Seas: Trump And PM Modi Discuss Middle East And Hormuz Crisis
Trump and PM Modi discuss Middle East conflict and Strait of Hormuz blockade, seeking de-escalation and energy security.
US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East, including the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The call focused on efforts to maintain open shipping routes and de-escalate regional tensions.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, has been closed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). President Trump has urged multiple nations, including NATO allies, to assist in reopening the channel, citing its importance for global energy security. “President Donald Trump just spoke with Prime Minister Modi. They discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open,” said US Envoy **Sergio Gor.
The discussion came shortly after Trump announced a five-day postponement of planned strikes on Iranian power plants, following a 48-hour ultimatum to reopen the Strait. He described talks with Iran as “productive” regarding hostilities in the region, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the issue domestically, emphasizing India’s diplomatic initiatives to safeguard Indian vessels. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Monday, he said attacks on commercial ships and disruptions in key waterways were unacceptable. On Tuesday, in the Rajya Sabha, he reiterated that India is actively pursuing measures to ensure safe passage for Indian ships amid the conflict.
Modi further outlined India’s broader strategy to secure energy resources, including gas and crude oil, from multiple sources while encouraging de-escalation of hostilities. “India wants peace in West Asia through dialogue and diplomacy. We are in touch with Iran, Israel, and the US; our aim is dialogue and diplomacy to ensure peace in the region,” he said, emphasizing a focus on resolving tensions through negotiation rather than conflict.
As global energy markets remain sensitive to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the discussions between Trump and Modi underscore the importance of international collaboration and diplomacy to maintain stability in the region and protect commercial shipping lanes.
