Dharmendra Pradhan's 4 Years As Education Minister: NEP Push To NEET Controversies
Pradhan's tenure marked reforms, debates and controversies.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet after more than four years in office, following weeks of student protests over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and later intensified by activist Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike, had spread beyond Delhi's Jantar Mantar, increasing political pressure on the government over its handling of the examination issue. In his resignation letter shared on X, Pradhan said his decision was aimed at protecting the future of students, preventing what he described as attempts by "anti-national forces" to exploit the protests and maintaining national unity.
The resignation came amid growing demands from student groups and opposition parties, who had been seeking accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is yet to take a final decision on accepting the resignation. Pradhan stepped down after serving as the Union Education Minister for over four years, a tenure marked by significant policy changes as well as several controversies surrounding India's examination system and education governance. One of the biggest milestones during his tenure was the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which introduced major changes in school and higher education structures, including reforms aimed at improving flexibility, skill-based learning and multidisciplinary education.
The NEP 2020 became one of the central achievements associated with Pradhan's tenure. The policy sought to replace traditional education models with a more holistic approach, focusing on foundational learning, vocational education, regional languages and greater integration of technology. The government described the reforms as a long-term transformation of India's education system, while critics raised concerns about implementation challenges, funding requirements and the pace of execution. However, Pradhan's tenure was also marked by repeated challenges related to examination management and higher education administration.

The NEET-UG paper leak controversy became one of the biggest crises faced by the Education Ministry, with students and opposition parties alleging failures in ensuring the integrity of major entrance examinations. The issue triggered protests across the country, with demands for investigations, accountability and reforms to prevent future irregularities. The controversy intensified after allegations emerged regarding the leak of examination papers and irregularities in the conduct of the medical entrance test. The government faced criticism over its response, while officials maintained that investigations were underway and action would be taken against those found responsible.
The protests eventually became a major political issue, with opposition parties using the matter to question the government's handling of student concerns. During his time as Education Minister, Pradhan also oversaw changes in curriculum frameworks, higher education policies and initiatives aimed at expanding digital learning. His ministry worked on implementing various aspects of the NEP, including reforms in universities, skill development programmes and efforts to modernise India's education ecosystem. Pradhan's resignation marks a significant political development for the Union government, coming at a time when education-related issues have become a major point of public debate.
While his supporters have highlighted the policy reforms introduced during his tenure, critics have focused on examination controversies and governance challenges. As the government considers the next steps, the future leadership of the Education Ministry will face the task of addressing concerns over examination transparency while continuing the implementation of long-term education reforms. The transition comes at a crucial moment for India's education sector, with students, institutions and policymakers closely watching the government's response to ongoing challenges.
