Dharmasthala’s Mystery: Karnataka’s SIT to Probe into Murder and Assault Mystery

SIT formed to investigate murders, sexual assaults, and missing women in Dharmasthala.

The Karnataka government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe disturbing allegations of murders, sexual assaults, and disappearances of women in the Dharmasthala region of Dakshina Kannada district, spanning over two decades. The government order, issued on July 19 and shared with the press on Sunday, responds to a letter from Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Choudhary, who cited a court claim of “hundreds of bodies buried in the Dharmasthala area.”

Led by Pranav Mohanty, Director General of Police (Internal Security Division), the SIT includes Additional Commissioner M N Anucheth, Deputy Commissioner Soumya Latha, and Superintendent Jitendra Kumar Dayama. The team is tasked with investigating a case registered under Section 211(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Dharmasthala Police Station, alongside related cases across Karnataka. The SIT will operate with resources from the Dakshina Kannada District Police and report regularly to the Director General of Police (DGP), with a comprehensive report to follow.

The probe was triggered by media reports of a human skull discovery and statements from a missing medical student’s family, pointing to a “disturbing pattern of abuse, unnatural deaths, and disappearances” over 20 years. The Karnataka Women’s Commission highlighted these concerns, prompting the government to empower the SIT to uncover the truth behind these grave allegations.
