Dhangar Leader on Day 4 of Hunger Protest Over ST Status Demand

Dhangar activist continues hunger strike for ST status.

Jalna, Maharashtra, Dipak Borhade, a determined activist from the Dhangar community, continued his indefinite hunger strike for the fourth consecutive day, pressing for the inclusion of his community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. The protest, staged in front of the Jalna collectorate, has drawn significant attention as Borhade vowed to persist with his "fast unto death" until the state government meets his demands.

Borhade issued a stern ultimatum, stating, “If the government fails to decide by September 24, it will face the consequences. This is our final fight.” Despite challenging weather conditions, including heavy rains and the collapse of a canopy at the protest site due to gusty winds on Friday night, large numbers of Dhangar community members have rallied in support, undeterred by the elements. The canopy was swiftly re-erected, symbolizing the community’s resilience.

The Dhangar community, traditionally nomadic shepherds and cattle-rearers, comprises approximately 9% of Maharashtra’s population and is currently classified under the Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) category. For years, they have advocated for ST status, which would grant them greater access to affirmative action benefits, including reservations in education and government jobs. The ongoing protest underscores the community’s growing frustration with the state’s inaction on their long-standing demand.
