Devesh Kumar Becomes Vice-Chairman Of Bihar State Planning Board

Devesh Kumar takes charge as Bihar Planning Board's new Vice-Chairman.

Former Bihar Legislative Council member Devesh Kumar assumed charge as the Vice-Chairman of the Bihar State Planning Board on Friday. His appointment places him in a key role in the state’s planning framework, with the board responsible for contributing to policy formulation and development planning across different sectors.

After taking charge, Kumar stressed the need to make the Planning Board more effective in supporting Bihar’s inclusive, balanced and sustainable development. He said the board should play a stronger role in shaping long-term development strategies and ensuring that planning responds to the needs of different sections and regions of the state.

Kumar highlighted the importance of evidence-based planning in achieving Bihar’s long-term development objectives. He said policies and development programmes should be guided by reliable data, proper assessment and sustained planning rather than short-term considerations. Such an approach, he noted, would help the state address emerging challenges while making better use of available resources.

He also linked the Planning Board’s responsibilities to the broader goal of achieving a Developed Bihar by 2047. Kumar said reaching this objective would require a clear long-term vision supported by well-planned and measurable development initiatives. The emphasis, he indicated, should remain on creating a framework that can support sustained economic and social progress.

The Planning Board’s role assumes significance as Bihar continues to focus on improving development outcomes and addressing regional and social disparities. Strengthening institutional planning and coordination can help align government priorities with longer-term economic, infrastructure and welfare objectives. Kumar’s remarks indicated an emphasis on making the board more closely involved in this process.

Kumar’s assumption of office marks the beginning of his tenure as Vice-Chairman of the Bihar State Planning Board. His focus on evidence-based and long-term planning is expected to guide his approach to the board’s work. Further details on specific initiatives or priorities under his leadership were not immediately available.
