Devendra Fadnavis Hints At Social Media Limits For Under-16s In Conversation With Aamir Khan

Devendra Fadnavis says Maharashtra is discussing curbs on social media use for children below 16.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has indicated that the state government is considering restrictions on social media access for children under the age of 16, citing growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on young minds. Speaking on Tuesday, Fadnavis said the government is seriously examining the issue as part of broader discussions on how technology is shaping the behavior and thinking patterns of the younger generation.

Fadnavis expressed concern that social media platforms have evolved beyond simple entertainment tools and are increasingly influencing how people think and consume information. He argued that algorithms on these platforms are designed to repeatedly show users content similar to what they already engage with, potentially narrowing perspectives and reinforcing specific patterns of thought. According to him, this algorithm-driven environment may subtly guide users’ beliefs and habits over time.

The Chief Minister also raised concerns about declining attention spans in society, attributing part of the trend to the popularity of short-form digital content. He noted that the widespread consumption of brief video clips, often lasting just 30 seconds, has made it harder for people to focus on longer and more detailed information. Fadnavis acknowledged that even his own reading habits have been affected, describing the shift as a broader challenge created by constant digital distractions.

The issue came up during a public discussion with Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who asked whether Maharashtra might follow the lead of other states exploring age-based restrictions on social media use. In response, Fadnavis confirmed that the subject is currently under active consideration within the state government, with policymakers debating possible age thresholds such as 16 or 17 years.

Although Fadnavis stopped short of announcing an immediate ban, he stressed that some form of intervention may be necessary to mitigate the potential negative effects of social media on children. He said the government is examining various approaches that could help limit exposure while still acknowledging the role of digital platforms in modern life.

Any policy move by Maharashtra, one of India’s most economically and politically influential states, could have wider implications for the country. Observers note that if the state introduces stricter regulations for young users, it could influence similar debates across India about how to balance technological access with the protection of children’s mental well-being.
