Detained at Jantar Mantar, AISA’s Neha Bora Draws Attention for Her One Piece T-Shirt
Pirate emblem has also featured in Nepal and Indonesia protests.
Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students Association (AISA), has drawn attention during protests in Delhi after wearing a red T-shirt featuring the Jolly Roger emblem from the Japanese manga series One Piece. The symbol, associated with the fictional Straw Hat Pirates, has appeared at demonstrations in several countries, including Nepal, Indonesia and France, prompting debate over its growing use as a symbol of political dissent. Bora wore the T-shirt during a protest gathering at Jantar Mantar on October 10, 2026, organised following a call by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other groups. Her appearance has brought renewed attention to how popular-culture imagery is being adopted by protesters to communicate dissatisfaction with political and social institutions.
The T-shirt features the One Piece logo, with a skull wearing a yellow-and-orange straw hat, representing the Straw Hat Pirates led by the fictional character Monkey D Luffy. Bora had also shared a photograph of herself wearing the T-shirt on X, accompanied by the caption, “Dilli Haat becomes Jantar Mantar today! See you there!” The image subsequently became a subject of discussion on social media, with some users expressing solidarity with her and others questioning the choice of a symbol that has featured prominently in demonstrations abroad. The debate has extended beyond the clothing itself to the broader significance of symbols that move from entertainment into political movements.
The Jolly Roger emblem gained wider visibility during protests in Nepal in 2025, when demonstrators displayed the flag amid widespread dissatisfaction with the government. A photograph showing a protester descending from the gates of Singha Durbar, the seat of Nepal's government, with the flag attracted attention. The emblem was also seen during demonstrations in Indonesia and the Philippines, where protests against governments were accompanied by public displays of the symbol. In France, students reportedly carried the flag during demonstrations demanding better educational facilities. Its repeated appearance across different countries has raised questions about whether the emblem has developed a shared meaning among young protesters or whether its significance varies according to local political circumstances.

Within the One Piece storyline, the Jolly Roger represents the Straw Hat Pirates, whose fictional leader challenges corrupt and tyrannical rulers. The straw hat distinguishes the emblem from conventional pirate flags, while the character's adventures have helped the series develop a global following since its debut in 1997. Bikhyat Khatri, who was associated with Nepal's protest movement, described the symbol as representing “aggression and determination to push anything that comes in its way.” Its use in real-world demonstrations has therefore prompted competing interpretations, with some viewing it as an expression of resistance and determination, while others question whether its association with unrest could blur the distinction between peaceful protest and violence.
Bora was among those detained during the October 10 demonstrations in Delhi, where protesters, political workers, journalists and activists were taken into custody amid unrest around the Lutyens' Delhi area. Politician-turned-opposition voice Yogendra Yadav and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan also joined the demonstration in support of the protesters. The gatherings formed part of a wider period of public mobilisation in India during 2026. Earlier protests had emerged over the University Grants Commission's proposed regulations on caste-based discrimination, while another round of demonstrations led by the CJP began in June following remarks attributed to the Chief Justice of India. The article links the latest protests to mounting public dissatisfaction, although the causes and demands vary across the movements.
Bora's T-shirt has consequently become part of a wider discussion about the relationship between youth culture, social media and political expression. The emblem's appearance in demonstrations across national borders suggests that fictional imagery can acquire meanings beyond its original entertainment setting, particularly when protesters seek recognisable symbols of resistance. However, the interpretation of the One Piece flag remains contested, and its use does not necessarily indicate that demonstrators in different countries share identical objectives or political beliefs. As protests continue to draw attention in India and elsewhere, the debate surrounding the symbol raises a broader question about whether popular-culture imagery can unite diverse expressions of dissent without becoming associated with the violence reported at some demonstrations.
