Delhi's Matiala Slum Inferno: 80 Jhuggis Gutted in Late-Night Fire

A massive fire tore through a slum cluster in the Matiala area of southwest Delhi late Wednesday night, gutting at least 80 shanties and causing extensive damage to adjoining waste material warehouses near a local fish market, authorities reported on Thursday.

The blaze erupted around 11:54 pm on March 11, prompting an immediate response from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), which dispatched multiple fire tenders—reports varying from 23 to nearly 28—to the scene in the Mansaram Park vicinity of Matiala village, close to Uttam Nagar. Firefighting operations continued for several hours, with cooling efforts underway by early Thursday morning to prevent any resurgence of flames. The fire spread rapidly across a densely packed area spanning roughly four acres, affecting jhuggis (informal settlements) and nearby storage facilities stocked with combustible materials.

Police and fire officials confirmed that all residents were safely evacuated thanks to swift action by local teams and Bindapur police station personnel, who received a related PCR call shortly after midnight. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, a relief amid the scale of destruction that left dozens of families displaced and without shelter or belongings in one of Delhi's many vulnerable informal settlements.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with preliminary details pointing to the highly flammable nature of the slum structures—often constructed from temporary materials—and the presence of waste warehouses that likely accelerated the spread.
