Delhi Unveils New Hospitals, Trauma And Dialysis Units On PM’s Birthday

Over 100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, hospital blocks, and dialysis machines launched in Delhi.

On the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 75th birthday, Delhi's healthcare system saw a substantial upgrade with the inauguration of 101 new Ayushman Arogya Mandir units, five advanced hospital blocks costing Rs 503.49 crore, and 150 dialysis machines across government facilities. These developments, announced on Wednesday, aim to bolster emergency, critical care, maternal, and child health services, addressing the growing demand for accessible medical care in the capital under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to achieve universal health coverage, as outlined in the National Health Policy 2017.

The Ayushman Bharat programme, launched in 2018, comprises two pillars: Health and Wellness Centres for primary care and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which provides up to Rs 5 lakh annual health insurance for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation to over 50 crore vulnerable individuals. The new Ayushman Arogya Mandir units, rebranded Health and Wellness Centres, focus on preventive and ambulatory services, enhancing primary healthcare delivery in underserved areas of Delhi. This expansion supports the scheme's goal of integrating digital health ecosystems, including electronic health records via Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts, to ensure seamless care continuity.

Key hospital enhancements include the Sant Shri Durbal Nath Ji Trauma Block at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, equipped with a dedicated emergency department and a fully operational ICU for 24/7 critical care. At Guru Gobind Singh Hospital in Raghubir Nagar, a new Inpatient Department (IPD) block features expanded maternity and paediatric wards alongside advanced neonatal units to improve outcomes for mothers and infants.

Similarly, the Shri Dada Dev Matri Avum Shishu Chikitsalaya in Dwarka now has a dedicated Mother and Child block with modern neonatal facilities, targeting reductions in infant and maternal mortality rates. Additional IPD and Outpatient Department (OPD) blocks at Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital in Moti Nagar and Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital in Pitampura will increase inpatient capacity and streamline consultations, reducing wait times for thousands of daily patients.

Complementing these, 150 dialysis machines were installed across six major hospitals—Burari, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial, Jag Pravesh Chandra, Janakpuri Super Speciality, and Ambedkar Nagar—equipped with RO water purification systems and staffed by nephrologists and technicians. This addresses the rising need for kidney care among low-income groups, offering free or subsidised services.

The upgrades reflect ongoing reforms in Delhi's healthcare, including AI integration at institutions like AIIMS and phased improvements promised earlier in 2025, amid a national budget allocation of Rs 99,858 crore for health infrastructure.
