Delhi To See Light Rain Today As Heavy Monsoon Showers Loom This Week

Delhi is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with light rainfall at isolated places on Sunday as monsoon conditions continue across the national capital, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather department has also forecast an increase in monsoon activity during the coming days, with heavier rainfall and thunderstorms likely across the city later this week.

The IMD's regional centre in New Delhi said the city is likely to witness very light to light rain during the forenoon and afternoon, followed by another spell of light rainfall at isolated locations during the night. As of Sunday morning, Delhi recorded a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels stood at 87 per cent, making conditions feel significantly warmer with an apparent temperature of 36 degrees Celsius.

The weather department has forecast a maximum temperature of around 34 degrees Celsius for the day. While intermittent showers are expected to provide some relief from the prevailing heat, high humidity is likely to keep weather conditions uncomfortable between rain spells. Residents have also been advised to remain prepared for scattered thunderstorms accompanying the rainfall.

On Saturday, Delhi recorded a marginal rise in daytime temperatures despite receiving trace rainfall in some parts of the city. The Safdarjung weather station, considered the city's primary observatory, recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, which was 0.6 degree above the seasonal average and unchanged from the previous day. The minimum temperature settled at 27.9 degrees Celsius, 0.8 degree above normal and slightly lower than Friday's reading.

Among other monitoring stations, Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius, reflecting a slight increase from the previous day, while the minimum temperature stood at 25.6 degrees Celsius. With monsoon activity expected to strengthen through the week, the IMD has indicated that Delhi could witness more widespread rainfall and thunderstorms, which may improve overall weather conditions while also increasing the possibility of waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas.
