Delhi Teen Falls Into Overflowing Drain While Returning Home From Work
Delhi teen swept away after falling into an overflowing drain.
An 18-year-old man, Ankit, remains untraced after he fell into an overflowing drain in South East Delhi while returning home from work amid torrential rain on Friday evening. The incident took place around 8 pm in the Priyanka Camp area under the Sarita Vihar police station limits. Heavy rainfall across Delhi and the National Capital Region caused widespread waterlogging and disrupted movement in several areas.
According to family members and local residents, Ankit had completed his work at a company in Sector 62, Noida, and was travelling home to South East Delhi. He reached an open drain near a bridge in Sarita Vihar, where rainwater was flowing rapidly. Witnesses said several people at the spot tried to caution him against crossing the area, but he attempted to move across the bridge to reach home.
During the attempt, Ankit lost his footing and fell into the water. Residents said the strong current quickly carried him away, making it difficult for people nearby to locate him. His father, Sunil, was informed about the incident and contacted the police. Police personnel and divers reached the area on Friday night, but the search operation had to be halted because of darkness.

Search operations resumed the following morning, with teams including National Disaster Response Force personnel and divers looking for the missing teenager. However, Ankit had not been located at the time of reporting. His father has appealed to authorities to intensify the search efforts. Family members said Ankit worked as a pantry worker at A1 Silverstein Service Measurement in Sector 62, Noida.
The incident has also renewed concerns over open drains and safety measures in the area during periods of heavy rainfall. Bhagwan Jha, the colony's Up-Pradhan, said residents had previously raised concerns about the open drain with authorities. He said the water was moving rapidly when Ankit fell, leaving people at the spot with limited ability to intervene.
The incident occurred as torrential rain caused widespread disruption across Delhi-NCR. Severe waterlogging was reported on MB Road near the Air Force Station, while areas including Okhla Mor, Khanpur, Deoli, Ambedkar Nagar and Sangam Vihar also faced flooding. Several vehicles were stranded or broke down on inundated roads, adding to traffic problems. The India Meteorological Department had forecast continued moderate to heavy rainfall before conditions were expected to ease from Saturday.
