Delhi Teachers to Undergo Hands-On AI Training Under SCERT’s New Education Initiative
Delhi’s SCERT introduces AI training to help teachers personalise learning and improve classroom engagement.
In a bid to modernise education and equip educators for a digital future, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in Delhi has launched a pioneering initiative to train schoolteachers in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into classrooms. Announced via a circular on Friday, the 'AI-Mediated Classroom Project' aims to enable teachers to personalise learning experiences, streamline assessments, and adopt innovative teaching methods. This programme comes at a time when India's education sector is increasingly emphasising technology integration, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's focus on leveraging emerging technologies to enhance pedagogical outcomes.
The two-day hands-on training, scheduled for October 8 and 9, will target teachers from Delhi's government schools, which serve over 824,224 students and employ 16,633 educators across 1,075 institutions. The initiative extends beyond core teaching to address administrative burdens, such as creating PowerPoint presentations, brainstorming extracurricular ideas, and editing photos. By freeing up time for student interactions, AI tools are expected to boost classroom engagement and foster meaningful learning. SCERT officials highlighted that this training will prepare students for an AI-driven world, where digital literacy is essential for future employability and innovation.
The programme unfolds in two structured phases to ensure widespread impact. Phase one involves 100 computer science teachers from 50 selected government schools, who will participate in an intensive capacity-building workshop and subsequently serve as master trainers within their institutions. "Once trained, these 100 teachers will guide others on effectively using AI tools," an SCERT official explained. Phase two shifts to school-level implementation, nominating 15 subject teachers per school—three each from mathematics, science, English, Hindi, and social science for Classes 6 and 9—for specialised sessions. The Directorate of Education has already identified the participating schools and teachers, ensuring a targeted rollout.

To sustain the project's momentum, SCERT plans follow-up sessions and feedback mechanisms to evaluate tool adoption and refine approaches. Featured AI resources include 'Napkin' for text-to-image generation and 'Gamma' for rapid presentation creation, among others. This aligns with broader efforts to create future-ready classrooms, empowering teachers with skills to enhance engagement and learning outcomes. As Delhi pioneers AI in public education, the initiative underscores a commitment to equitable access to technology, potentially setting a benchmark for other states amid India's rapid digital transformation.
