Delhi-Siliguri Bullet Train Project Targets Faster Rail Connectivity Across India

New bullet train corridor aims to cut travel time.

India is moving ahead with plans to expand its high-speed rail network, with the proposed Delhi-Varanasi-Siliguri bullet train corridor emerging as one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. The corridor is among seven high-speed rail routes announced by the Union government and is expected to play a major role in improving connectivity between northern and eastern India. The project is part of a larger plan to develop Delhi-NCR as a central hub for future bullet train services, with multiple high-speed corridors proposed from the national capital.

The Delhi-Varanasi-Siliguri route is expected to become India’s longest high-speed rail corridor, covering approximately 1,705 kilometres. The proposed alignment will connect major cities including Delhi, Noida, Mathura, Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi, Buxar, Patna, Begusarai, Khagaria, Katihar, and New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. According to reports, the journey time between Delhi and Siliguri could be reduced from nearly 20 hours by existing modes of transport to around six hours once the bullet train service becomes operational. The Railway Ministry is currently conducting surveys and feasibility studies for the project.

Another major corridor planned from Delhi is the Delhi-Lucknow-Varanasi high-speed rail route, which aims to improve connectivity across Uttar Pradesh. The proposed corridor is expected to pass through Noida, Jewar International Airport, Mathura, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Kannauj, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Prayagraj, New Bhadohi, and Varanasi. With train speeds expected to reach up to 320 kmph, the route could reduce travel time from Delhi to Lucknow to around two hours and ten minutes, while Delhi-Varanasi travel could take approximately three hours and fifty minutes.

The government has also proposed other high-speed rail corridors connecting Delhi with western and northern regions. The Delhi-Jaipur-Udaipur-Ahmedabad corridor is expected to link Rajasthan and Gujarat with the national capital and eventually connect with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. Another proposed Delhi-Amritsar-Jammu corridor aims to provide faster connectivity to Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, with a possible future extension towards Pathankot and Katra. These projects are currently at different stages of planning, surveys, and approvals.

The expansion of India’s bullet train network is expected to involve significant investment, with the seven priority corridors estimated to require nearly Rs 2 lakh crore. While the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has already entered the construction phase and is expected to begin partial operations between Surat and Bilimora in 2027, the Delhi-based corridors are still undergoing feasibility assessments and design work. The government has set a target of developing around 250 kilometres of high-speed rail track annually and is also working on indigenous high-speed train technology to strengthen the country’s rail infrastructure.
