Delhi-Rishikesh Namo Bharat Rail Project Set To Revolutionise Regional Connectivity And Travel

The Centre has given in-principle approval to extend the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), also known as the Namo Bharat corridor, from Modipuram in Meerut to Haridwar and Rishikesh. The proposed 150-kilometre extension is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Delhi-NCR and two of India's most prominent pilgrimage destinations, while boosting economic activity across western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The project, which is currently in the planning stage, aims to expand the reach of India's fastest regional rail network beyond Meerut.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) survey is underway to assess the technical and financial feasibility of the extension. Once completed, the corridor is expected to create a seamless high-speed rail link connecting the National Capital Region with the Ganga cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh. The Namo Bharat train has already transformed regional travel between Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut by offering faster, more reliable, and comfortable transportation.Extending the network further north is expected to reduce travel time substantially, making it easier for commuters, tourists, pilgrims, and business travellers to move between the regions. Beyond improving passenger connectivity, the proposed corridor is expected to generate wider economic benefits.

Improved transport infrastructure could stimulate industrial growth, encourage investments, and support the development of logistics hubs along the route. Better connectivity is also likely to strengthen trade and commercial links between Delhi-NCR, western Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Tourism is expected to receive a major boost if the project is implemented. Haridwar and Rishikesh attract millions of pilgrims and domestic as well as international tourists every year. Faster rail connectivity from Delhi could make travel more convenient, increasing visitor numbers and benefiting local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and retail establishments.

The corridor could also encourage new residential and commercial development near proposed stations. Improved accessibility often leads to the growth of satellite townships, real estate projects, and business districts, creating employment opportunities and supporting long-term urban development in areas along the route. Another key objective of the extension is to reduce congestion on the Delhi-Haridwar highway corridor, one of northern India's busiest road networks, particularly during weekends, festive seasons, and major religious events such as the Kanwar Yatra and Kumbh Mela.

A high-speed regional rail service could shift a significant number of travellers from road to rail, easing pressure on highways while offering a safer and more sustainable mode of transport. While the proposal is still awaiting the completion of detailed studies and subsequent approvals, the Centre's in-principle clearance marks an important step towards expanding India's regional rapid transit network. If implemented, the Delhi-Meerut-Haridwar-Rishikesh Namo Bharat corridor is expected to become a key infrastructure project, strengthening regional connectivity and supporting economic growth across two states while bringing millions of people closer through faster and more efficient rail travel.
