Delhi Restricts Public Entry To Red Fort Ahead Of August 15 Independence Day Celebrations
Red Fort closes for Independence Day preparations until August.
Delhi's iconic Red Fort has been closed to the public from July 15 until August 15 to facilitate preparations for India's 80th Independence Day celebrations, according to an order issued by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The temporary closure is part of the annual security and logistical arrangements made ahead of the national event, during which the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the historic monument.
The order, dated July 9, was issued under Rule 5 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959. It states that the Red Fort will remain closed to all visitors from July 15 until the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The restriction applies to tourists as well as the general public to enable authorities to carry out extensive preparations at the venue.
A senior ASI official confirmed on Wednesday that the closure is a routine measure implemented every year before Independence Day. The month-long restriction allows security agencies, event organisers and government departments to undertake stage construction, technical installations, security inspections and other arrangements required for the national celebrations without disrupting public access or compromising safety.

The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has served as the focal point of India's Independence Day celebrations since August 15, 1947, when the country gained independence from British rule. Every year, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag from the fort's ramparts and delivers the Independence Day address, outlining the government's achievements, priorities and vision for the nation. The ceremony is attended by constitutional authorities, members of the armed forces, diplomats, schoolchildren and invited guests.
Security at the Red Fort is significantly heightened in the weeks leading up to Independence Day. Multiple agencies, including Delhi Police, central armed police forces and intelligence units, conduct extensive surveillance, security drills and anti-sabotage checks around the monument and adjoining areas. Entry to the Red Fort on August 15 is restricted to individuals holding government-issued passes, while traffic regulations and security restrictions are enforced across central Delhi to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.
The temporary closure is expected to affect tourists planning to visit one of the capital's most prominent heritage sites during the period. However, authorities have emphasised that the measure is necessary to ensure the successful organisation of one of the country's most significant national ceremonies. The Red Fort is scheduled to reopen to the general public after the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2026, once security arrangements are withdrawn and the venue is restored for visitors.
