Delhi Residents Disrupt Traffic to Protest Over Civic Neglect Allegations
South Delhi locals protest MCD neglect amid piles of waste.
Hundreds of residents from Kalkaji Extension in south Delhi staged a determined protest on December 21, 2025, by forming a human chain along the main road linking their area to Okhla, effectively bringing traffic to a complete halt for 15 minutes. The demonstration was directed against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, with participants accusing civic authorities of consistently failing to address longstanding issues of garbage accumulation and illegal parking despite repeated complaints spanning an entire year.
Protesters emphasized severe hazards posed by massive uncollected waste heaps, roaming stray cows obstructing pathways, and heavy commercial trucks routinely converting residential streets into unauthorized parking zones. These conditions, they argued, create life-threatening risks particularly for children heading to nearby schools or playing outdoors in the evenings, while also contributing to unsanitary environments conducive to health outbreaks.
Former Residents' Welfare Association general secretary Harjinder Singh Harry detailed numerous unsuccessful attempts to engage officials, noting that the garbage problem is aggravated by indiscriminate dumping of construction debris and waste from surrounding areas including Govindpuri, Okhla, and nearby slums. He pointed out that school boundary walls have been repurposed as dumping sites, further illustrating the extent of official negligence in the locality.

Participants voiced deep frustration over what they perceive as discriminatory treatment compared to more upscale neighborhoods, insisting that their community—composed of decent, law-abiding citizens—will no longer tolerate being overlooked. Several lawyers among the protesters, braving cold and windy conditions, affirmed their commitment to pursuing legal recourse, including approaching the Supreme Court to hold responsible parties accountable and enforce fundamental rights to clean and safe living conditions.
Shared videos on social media captured extensive stretches of garbage lining access roads to DDA colonies, as demonstrators marched in circles, chanted slogans against the MCD, and questioned how long authorities would wait before acting—whether until a child is injured by a truck or a disease epidemic erupts. As of now, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has not issued any official statement in response to the protest.
