Delhi Raid Uncovers Racket Relabelling Expired Food For Resale

Delhi raid uncovers alleged racket relabelling expired branded food products.

A suspected food relabelling racket has come to light in Delhi after authorities uncovered a unit in the Okhla Industrial Area that allegedly replaced expiry labels on branded food and beverage products before sending them back into the market. The operation was reportedly exposed during a raid initiated following a tip-off regarding child labour, leading investigators to uncover evidence of large-scale repackaging of expired products. Authorities are now examining whether the relabelled items reached consumers through retail outlets and e-commerce platforms.

The unit was allegedly operating from a three-storey commercial building in Southeast Delhi's Okhla Industrial Area. While the building housed other legitimate businesses, investigators claim the ground-floor premises were being used to alter manufacturing and expiry labels on packaged food items, including chips, soft drinks and fruit juices. According to officials, trucks carrying cartons of branded products frequently arrived at the premises before the goods were allegedly repackaged and redistributed.

The suspected operation reportedly continued for several years without attracting significant attention. Workers employed at nearby factories observed regular movement of goods in and out of the building but were unaware of the activities taking place inside. Preliminary findings suggest the unit may have handled large quantities of packaged food and beverages, raising concerns about the scale of the alleged operation and the number of consumers who may have unknowingly purchased the products.

Authorities are investigating the supply chain to determine how the repackaged goods entered the market and whether they were sold through local distributors, retail stores or online grocery and quick-commerce platforms. Officials are also examining records, seized materials and product batches to identify the companies affected and establish whether food safety regulations and consumer protection laws were violated. No official confirmation has yet been issued regarding the specific brands or e-commerce platforms involved.

The case has highlighted serious concerns about food safety and quality control in the distribution of packaged consumer goods. Experts note that altering expiry dates on food products can pose significant health risks, as consumers rely on accurate labelling to determine product freshness and safety. Regulatory authorities are expected to conduct further inspections to identify similar illegal operations and strengthen oversight of warehouses and repackaging facilities.

Investigations into the alleged racket are continuing, with officials working to identify those responsible and trace the full distribution network. If the allegations are substantiated, those involved could face action under food safety, consumer protection and other applicable laws. Authorities have advised consumers to remain vigilant, carefully check product packaging and report any suspected tampering or irregular labelling to the relevant agencies.
