Delhi Prepares For BRICS With Road Repairs, Beautification, Toilets And 154 Digital Screens

New Delhi is undergoing an extensive civic makeover ahead of the BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held on September 12 and 13. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has stepped up preparations across major roads, public spaces and key movement corridors, with 41 roads divided into 14 circles for focused monitoring. Ten hotels in Lutyens' Delhi, including Taj Hotel, Maurya Sheraton, Le Meridien, Claridges, Ashoka Hotel, Samrat Hotel, Leela Hotel, Janpath Hotel, Shangri-La and Taj Maan Singh Hotel, are among the venues expected to host delegates.

The preparations are focused on cleanliness, landscaping, lighting, infrastructure and uninterrupted civic services. Fifteen locations have been identified for floral boards, while 23 flower fountains will be installed across nine locations. Seventeen roundabouts will receive special beautification and electric illumination. Horticulture work includes seasonal flowers, landscaping, greening of brown patches, maintenance of green corridors, shrub pruning and the placement of decorative planters.

The 41 identified roads include Raisina Road, Sansad Marg, Rafi Marg, Ashoka Road, Janpath, Connaught Place, Shanti Path, Sardar Patel Marg, Teen Murti Marg, Africa Avenue, Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Marg, Lodhi Road and Prithviraj Road. A nodal officer has been assigned to each of the 14 circles, with daily inspections planned to monitor cleanliness, beautification, infrastructure and compliance with standard operating procedures. Additional sanitation workers and night-duty teams will be deployed from September 9 to 14, supported by mechanical sweepers, scrubbers and other cleaning equipment.

Civic agencies will also focus on pothole repairs, damaged footpaths, road signs, railings, street furniture and storm-water drains. Temporary dustbins and mobile toilets will be placed where required, while public toilets in identified areas will be inspected and maintained throughout the summit. Measures to reduce waterlogging will be undertaken in view of possible rain, alongside the removal of dry leaves and accumulated waste. Streetlights will be checked, decorative lighting installed and backup power arrangements maintained, with Quick Response Teams available to address electrical or illumination-related issues.

BRICS branding will be displayed across 154 digital screens and around 83 PTUs and CTUs in the designated areas. Special enforcement drives will address encroachments and unauthorised hoardings, while street vending and construction activity along important and VIP movement routes will be monitored. Medical teams and ambulances will be positioned at identified locations, while food establishments will undergo inspections and mosquito-control and other preventive health measures will be intensified. Parking arrangements and action against illegally parked vehicles will also form part of the preparations.

The NDMC has made separate civic arrangements for events including the BRICS Bazaar, BRICS Run & Ride, BRICS Murals & Painting and BRICS Food Festival. A 24x7 Command and Control Centre will monitor civic services through CCTV feeds, field reports and inspections, with helplines and response teams operating around the clock from a day before the summit until its conclusion. The NDMC will coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, Delhi Government, district authorities, Delhi Police and other Central Government agencies, while market associations, resident welfare associations and other local stakeholders have been asked to support cleanliness and upkeep efforts.
