Delhi Police Warns Citizens: Do Not Click Unknown Links Amid LPG Cylinder Crisis

Cyber fraudsters exploit LPG panic by sending malicious links to unsuspecting citizens.

The Delhi Police has issued a public advisory warning citizens about cyber fraud attempts linked to the ongoing shortage of LPG cylinders in several parts of the country. Authorities said scammers are exploiting public anxiety over cooking gas availability by posing as officials from gas agencies and sending malicious links to unsuspecting users. The advisory was released after multiple complaints suggested that fraudsters were using the crisis to target individuals through phone calls and text messages.

According to the police, cybercriminals typically contact victims from unknown numbers, claiming to represent LPG distributors or gas agencies. They then send links through messages and urge recipients to click them to confirm bookings or verify gas supply. Officials warned that interacting with such links could compromise sensitive personal and financial information. Once users click these links, scammers may gain access to banking details, passwords, and other confidential data, which could lead to financial losses.

Authorities also cautioned citizens against downloading suspicious files, particularly those with the “.apk” extension. These files are Android application packages that can install harmful software on mobile devices. Once installed, such applications can secretly collect data from phones, including one-time passwords (OTPs), account credentials, and other private information, allowing fraudsters to syphon money from bank accounts without the user’s knowledge.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and verify LPG-related information directly through authorised distributors or official agencies rather than clicking unknown links. Citizens have also been asked to immediately report suspicious calls, messages, or online activity to the cybercrime helpline or the nearest police station. The advisory comes as political debate intensifies over the reported LPG shortage, with opposition parties urging swift government action while leaders of the ruling alliance have accused critics of spreading panic.
