Delhi Police Register FIR After Fahim Nazir Alleges Assault at INDIA Bloc Protest

Fahim Nazir alleges he was thrashed at INDIA bloc protest.

Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons after Fahim Nazir, a man from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, alleged that he was assaulted during an INDIA bloc protest in New Delhi. The incident took place in the Connaught Place area on Thursday, October 8, when Nazir attended the demonstration to oppose the protesters and raise slogans supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nazir alleged that supporters of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi attacked him after a confrontation at the protest site.

Speaking about the incident, Nazir said he had attended the gathering to question the opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities against the government and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said he wanted to ask Rahul Gandhi why the opposition was alleging vote theft in recent elections despite the Congress having won national elections in 2004 and 2009. Nazir also raised slogans in support of Modi and against the Chief Election Commissioner, according to the report.

Nazir alleged that tensions escalated when another person in the crowd began raising anti-government slogans, leading to a confrontation in which slaps were exchanged before he was assaulted. He claimed that people supporting Rahul Gandhi thrashed him during the incident. Nazir further said he sustained injuries to his head and arm and was experiencing a severe headache. The allegations are part of his complaint to the police, and the identities of those accused have not been established in the information provided.

The Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the alleged assault and accused Congress workers of attacking a citizen for expressing support for the prime minister. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posted a video of the incident on social media and condemned the alleged actions of the protesters. The party described the episode as an attack on citizens’ democratic rights to express their political views. The claims made by political representatives remain allegations and are separate from the police investigation.

The protest was part of the opposition’s ongoing campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities connected with the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have been demonstrating since October 6 and have demanded Kumar’s resignation. They have raised concerns about the electoral roll revision process, while the dispute has become a focus of political exchanges between the ruling BJP and opposition parties.

The FIR marks the start of a formal police investigation into Nazir’s complaint. Since the case has been registered against unidentified persons, the investigation will be required to establish what happened during the confrontation and identify those allegedly involved. No arrests or further investigative findings were mentioned in the report. The incident has added to tensions surrounding the protest, where disagreements over electoral processes and political slogans reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation.
