Delhi Police Move to Clear Jantar Mantar as Protest Demand Met

Delhi Police on Saturday began asking student protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to vacate the protest site following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Police personnel used loudspeakers to inform demonstrators that their primary demand had been met and urged them to disperse peacefully while maintaining law and order in the area.

According to police, the announcement came shortly after Pradhan submitted his resignation, a development that had been widely welcomed by protesters associated with the CJP-led movement. Officers stationed at the venue repeatedly appealed to students to leave the protest site in an orderly manner, emphasising the need to restore normalcy around Jantar Mantar.

The demonstration had continued for more than a month, drawing students and supporters from different parts of the country. Throughout the protest, participants demanded accountability over the NEET paper leak and called for broader reforms in the education system. Pradhan's resignation had remained one of the key demands raised during the campaign.

Police officials said senior officers remained deployed at Jantar Mantar to regulate the crowd and ensure there was no breach of security arrangements during the dispersal process. The prolonged protest had also affected nearby commercial areas, with local businesses reporting a decline in footfall over the past several weeks. Markets around Jantar Mantar, which are frequented by tourists and residents, experienced reduced visitor numbers as security arrangements and demonstrations continued in the vicinity.

With the resignation announced, attention is now expected to shift towards the government's next steps in addressing the concerns raised by students. While police have appealed for the protest site to be cleared, discussions over education reforms and accountability are likely to continue in the coming days as stakeholders await further announcements from the Centre.
