Delhi Police Issues Guidelines For Weekly Thana Divas Jan Sunwai System

Delhi Police to conduct weekly public grievance hearings at all stations.

The Delhi Police has announced the rollout of a new public grievance redressal initiative titled “Thana Divas-Jan Sunwai”, aimed at strengthening citizen engagement and improving responsiveness at the police station level across the national capital. The programme has been introduced following directions from Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and is expected to begin next week in all police stations.

Under the new system, public hearings will be held every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at police stations across Delhi. The initiative is designed to provide residents with a structured platform to directly raise complaints, seek assistance, share suggestions and discuss concerns related to policing and public safety. Officials said the move is intended to make policing more transparent and citizen-friendly.

According to a circular issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha, senior officers from various ranks, including Special Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner, will attend these sessions on a rotational basis. Their presence is expected to ensure quicker resolution of grievances and improve oversight of complaints received during the hearings.

The guidelines make it mandatory for all police stations to hear every complainant who arrives for the Jan Sunwai, regardless of whether their complaint has been formally registered on the Integrated Complaint Monitoring System. Complaints raised during the sessions will be recorded and subsequently uploaded to the official system, with separate registers maintained for monitoring and follow-up action. Cases requiring investigation or field verification will be assigned immediately, with periodic reviews conducted by senior officers.

To improve accessibility and public convenience, Station House Officers have been instructed to ensure proper seating arrangements, assistance desks and a more welcoming environment during the weekly hearings. District-level police leadership, including DCPs, ACPs and SHOs, will be held accountable for the effective implementation of the initiative, with strict action proposed in cases of delay or negligence in handling grievances.

The circular also directs police districts to actively publicise the programme through Resident Welfare Associations, market associations, beat constables, notice boards and social media platforms to encourage wider participation. Each district will submit fortnightly reports detailing the number of grievances received, resolved and pending, along with key issues identified during the sessions. Officials said the initiative follows a high-level meeting between the Lieutenant Governor and senior police leadership, where emphasis was placed on improving public trust through interactive and responsive policing.
