Delhi Police Commissioner Removed Day After Attack on CM Rekha Gupta
Top cop ousted after CM assault sparks security concerns
In a swift move following a shocking attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Union Home Ministry has replaced Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh with senior IPS officer Satish Golcha.
Singh, a 1988-batch officer from the AGMUT cadre and current Director General of Home Guards, had only assumed the additional charge of Delhi Commissioner on August 1. His removal comes just a day after a major security breach at the CM’s residence during a 'Jan Sunwai' public meeting, where Gupta was physically assaulted by a man now identified as Rajesh Sakariya.
Golcha, a 1992-batch IPS officer also from the AGMUT cadre, brings extensive experience in Delhi policing. He has served in several key roles including DCP, Joint CP, and most notably as Special Commissioner of Police (Law & Order & Intelligence). He was also the Special CP during the 2020 North East Delhi riots and later served as Director General of Prisons from April 2024.

The decision to shunt Singh and appoint Golcha comes amid growing questions over the handling of the CM’s security. CCTV footage revealed that the attacker had conducted a reconnaissance of Gupta's Shalimar Bagh residence days before the assault. He managed to reach her and physically attack her — slapping her and pulling her hair — before being subdued by security personnel.
The attacker, Rajesh Sakariya, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat, reportedly traveled to Delhi after being upset by the Supreme Court’s recent ruling mandating that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR be moved to shelters. His mother told the media that he was emotionally disturbed by the judgment, citing his deep attachment to stray animals. Sakariya has been charged with several serious offences, including attempt to murder.
Meanwhile, CM Rekha Gupta, who sustained injuries to her head, hand, and shoulder, has received widespread support from BJP leaders and party workers. She met MPs at her residence in Civil Lines over the weekend and assured the public of her continued commitment.
Posting on X after the incident, Gupta said: “Naturally, I was in shock after this attack, but I am feeling better now. Such attacks can never break my spirit and resolve to serve the public.” She added that her public outreach efforts like Jan Sunwai would continue as before, with “more energy and dedication than ever.”
The swift leadership reshuffle in the Delhi Police indicates the Centre’s intent to tighten security protocols and send a strong message about accountability in sensitive matters involving high-profile public figures.
