Delhi-NCR Witnesses Heavy Rain as IMD Predicts Showers Until August 19

Delhi and the National Capital Region witnessed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Friday as active monsoon conditions continued to affect the region ahead of Independence Day. The weather system brought rain to several parts of Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that intermittent to heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds could continue over the coming days. The IMD has forecast wet conditions in Delhi and neighbouring areas until at least August 19, meaning residents may experience unsettled weather through the Independence Day weekend.

Meteorologists attributed the rainfall to an active monsoon trough passing close to the National Capital Region, along with a developing weather system over eastern India. The IMD also issued a red alert for several parts of Delhi, with the alert category indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204 mm in 24 hours. The forecast suggests that rainfall activity could remain variable, with periods of heavy showers interspersed with breaks. Authorities and residents are therefore expected to remain alert to possible waterlogging, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility during intense spells of rain.

The capital had recorded rainfall at several weather stations in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Friday. The Ridge received 7.6 mm, followed by Safdarjung with 3.3 mm, Palam with 3.0 mm and Lodhi Road with 1.1 mm. Ayanagar did not record rainfall during the period. Weather conditions are also expected to remain cloudy on Independence Day, August 15. During the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort, partly cloudy skies are forecast, with the possibility of light rain or brief showers in some areas. The forecast comes as Delhi prepares for major Independence Day celebrations and associated security and traffic arrangements.

The rainfall has also brought some improvement in Delhi's air quality. According to Central Pollution Control Board data, the city's Air Quality Index stood at 100 at 1 pm on Friday, placing it in the satisfactory category, compared with 103 at 9 am, when it was classified as moderate. Under the CPCB's classification, an AQI of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and 401-500 severe. With more rain expected across the weekend and into next week, weather conditions are likely to remain a key factor for commuters and residents across Delhi-NCR.
