Delhi-NCR Witnesses Dust Storms And Rain, Red Alert Issued For Three Hours

Dust storms and rain disrupt Delhi-NCR, red alert issued.

A sudden spell of severe weather swept across Delhi and adjoining parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday afternoon, as intense dust storms, strong winds, and intermittent rain disrupted normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red alert for the region, warning that adverse conditions could persist for up to three hours.

The IMD cautioned that wind speeds in isolated areas could reach up to 100 kmph, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning activity. The weather system triggered a sharp drop in visibility as thick dust clouds engulfed several parts of Delhi, impacting traffic movement and daily commuting.

The sudden change in weather began around 2:30 p.m., prompting urgent advisories not only for Delhi but also for adjoining regions in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Strong gusty winds were reported across multiple localities, bringing temporary relief from the intense heat that had gripped the region in the preceding days.

Meteorologists noted that the prevailing high temperatures had created unstable atmospheric conditions, contributing to the development of the storm system. The IMD said the dust storm was expected to be followed by thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall, which would help settle airborne dust particles and reduce temperatures further.

The alert covered several districts beyond the national capital. In Haryana, areas such as Sonipat, Rohtak, Bhiwani, and Charkhi Dadri were placed under warning, while in Uttar Pradesh districts including Bagpat and Sikandrabad were expected to experience similar conditions. Parts of Rajasthan, including Alwar and Bhiwadi, were also included in the alert zone.

Weather officials said conditions would gradually improve by evening, with a return to relatively dry weather expected thereafter. However, they advised residents to remain cautious during the alert period due to the risk of falling trees, reduced visibility, and lightning-related hazards.
