Delhi-NCR Expected To See Monsoon Between June 25 And 30, Says IMD
IMD projects monsoon arrival in Delhi-NCR by late June.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Delhi and the wider National Capital Region (NCR) between June 25 and June 30, offering residents an expected timeline for the arrival of the seasonal rains. The update comes as north India continues to experience intense summer heat, with intermittent relief provided by scattered thunderstorms in recent days. The monsoon’s arrival is being closely watched as it is expected to bring a significant drop in temperatures across the region.
According to the IMD, the onset of the monsoon in Delhi-NCR will mark a key transition from peak summer conditions to the rainy season. The weather office noted that recent thunderstorms have already helped ease heatwave-like conditions temporarily, although high temperatures and humidity remain a concern in several parts of the capital region. Meteorologists are monitoring atmospheric patterns to assess the exact progression of moisture-laden winds toward northern India.
The southwest monsoon officially made its onset over Kerala on June 4, arriving slightly later than its usual schedule and marginally behind initial IMD projections. Despite the delayed start, weather experts suggest that the system has gained momentum and is expected to advance steadily across the country over the coming weeks. Its northward movement is considered crucial for agriculture, water reservoirs, and overall climatic balance during the summer season.

In the meantime, Delhi and adjoining areas have witnessed fluctuating weather conditions, with brief spells of rain and thunderstorms offering short-lived relief from extreme heat. These pre-monsoon activities are typical in the region during this period and often signal the gradual strengthening of the monsoon trough as it moves northwards. However, officials have cautioned that heat-related discomfort may continue until sustained rainfall begins.
The IMD continues to advise residents to stay updated with weather alerts as conditions can change rapidly during the transition phase. The department is tracking wind patterns, humidity levels, and pressure systems that influence the monsoon’s advance. Once fully established, the monsoon is expected to bring widespread rainfall across northern India, significantly easing summer conditions and supporting agricultural activity in the region.
