Delhi Master Plan 2047 Proposes Four New Corridors to Ease NCR Traffic

Delhi Master Plan 2047 proposes four high-speed corridors linking NCR cities.

Delhi-NCR is set for a major road connectivity upgrade under the Delhi Master Plan 2047, which proposes four high-speed corridors connecting the capital with key cities and regions in neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The proposed network is aimed at providing faster alternatives for cross-border traffic while reducing congestion on some of Delhi's busiest roads. The plan focuses on developing ring roads and strategic link corridors that can allow vehicles to bypass congested areas of the capital and travel more efficiently across the wider National Capital Region.

One of the proposed corridors will extend Urban Extension Road-I from NH-1 GT Road towards the Ghaziabad-Loni-Baghpat Expressway. The link is expected to provide motorists from Sonipat, Narela and Bawana with an alternative route towards Ghaziabad and other parts of Uttar Pradesh. By improving direct connections between these areas, the corridor could reduce the need for vehicles to travel through heavily congested parts of Delhi. It is part of the broader strategy to create a more integrated road network across the NCR.

The proposed corridors are also expected to ease pressure on existing routes, including the Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Signature Bridge and Wazirabad Bridge. Better alternatives could help distribute traffic more evenly and improve movement between areas located on opposite sides of the Yamuna. The master plan seeks to move away from a road network where large volumes of inter-city traffic pass through central Delhi, instead creating routes that allow vehicles to reach destinations outside the capital more directly.

Another important proposal involves extending Urban Extension Road-II from the NH-8 and Dwarka area towards the Greater Noida Expressway and Noida International Airport at Jewar. The corridor could establish a stronger road connection between Indira Gandhi International Airport and Noida International Airport as the latter expands its operations. Improved connectivity between the two airports is expected to become increasingly important for passengers, businesses and freight movement across different parts of the NCR.

A separate high-speed connection has also been proposed between Dwarka Sector 21 and HUDA City Centre in Gurugram. The route is expected to strengthen connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram and provide an additional alternative to existing busy routes such as NH-48 and the Dwarka Expressway. Another proposed link from Dwarka towards Jhajjar could improve connectivity with Haryana and provide better access to the area around AIIMS Jhajjar, which has developed into an important healthcare and education centre.

The wider Master Plan 2047 aims to improve regional mobility while reducing the volume of traffic passing through congested parts of Delhi. It also proposes measures such as congestion charges for traffic travelling between Delhi and neighbouring cities including Noida and Ghaziabad. If implemented, the four corridors could reshape movement across the NCR by creating faster links between residential areas, commercial centres, industrial zones and airports. The proposals are part of a long-term effort to build a more connected and efficient metropolitan road network.
