Delhi LG Orders More Police Deployment In Narela, Announces New Parking Sites

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed key government agencies to work together on civic and security issues across the capital, with particular attention given to the rapidly developing Narela area. The directions were issued during a coordination meeting involving senior officials from the Delhi government, Delhi Police, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Fire Service. Sandhu called for a “whole of government” approach to matters requiring coordinated action across departments.

During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor stressed that agencies should avoid working in isolation when dealing with issues that require immediate intervention on the ground. The meeting focused on improving coordination between departments responsible for policing, urban development, civic services and fire safety. The approach is intended to ensure that decisions involving multiple agencies are implemented more efficiently and that problems are addressed through joint action rather than separate departmental responses.

Narela was among the areas that received specific attention during the meeting. The Delhi Police has been directed to increase its presence in the area and ensure adequate security as development activity expands. The MCD, meanwhile, has been asked to improve civic amenities in Narela. The directions come as the area undergoes increased development and attracts greater attention from both government agencies and prospective residents.

The focus on Narela follows a recent housing initiative by the DDA aimed at encouraging residents to move into the area. Last month, the development authority announced a 25 per cent discount on more than 1,200 ready-to-move flats in Narela under its KarmajeevI Awaas Yojana. The housing programme is expected to contribute to increased residential activity, making adequate security, roads, sanitation and other civic infrastructure increasingly important for the area.

The meeting also included directions concerning parking facilities in the capital. Authorities were asked to work towards opening parking sites to address congestion and improve traffic management. Parking remains a major urban challenge in Delhi, particularly in areas experiencing rapid development and increasing movement of residents and commercial activity. Coordinated action between civic agencies and other departments will be necessary to identify suitable locations and ensure that parking facilities are made available efficiently.

Sandhu's emphasis on coordination reflects the need for different agencies to work together on issues that cannot be effectively addressed by a single department. Security in developing neighbourhoods, for instance, requires police deployment to be supported by adequate roads, lighting and civic infrastructure. Similarly, expanding residential areas require planning authorities, municipal bodies and emergency services to coordinate their efforts to keep pace with population growth and new construction.

The directions are particularly significant for Narela as the area prepares for increased residential activity following the DDA's housing initiative. Greater occupancy could place additional demands on public services, policing, traffic management and municipal infrastructure. By asking the Delhi Police and MCD to strengthen their respective roles, the Lieutenant Governor's office has sought to ensure that development is accompanied by improvements in basic services and public safety.

The coordination meeting ultimately placed emphasis on faster implementation and shared responsibility among Delhi's major agencies. With Narela undergoing a renewed development push and other parts of the capital facing similar cross-departmental challenges, the “whole of government” approach is intended to reduce administrative gaps and improve responses to issues affecting residents. The success of the directions will depend on how effectively the agencies translate the decisions taken at the meeting into action on the ground.
