Delhi Lawyers Suspend Strike After Home Minister’s Assurance

Bar to meet Shah over evidence notification

The New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) suspended its ongoing strike in Delhi’s district courts on Thursday, following assurances from Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s representative to address concerns over a controversial August 13 notification by the Lieutenant Governor. The notification, allowing police to virtually present evidence in courts, had sparked a lawyers’ strike since August 22, disrupting judicial proceedings across the capital.

The NDBA, in a statement, announced that a meeting with Shah’s representative confirmed the Home Minister’s commitment to discuss and resolve the issue with an “open mind.” Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora clarified that the notification, intended to streamline evidence presentation under the new criminal laws, would only be implemented after consultations with stakeholders, including bar associations.

“In view of this positive response, we are suspending the agitation, including the planned demonstration at LG House and work abstinence in courts, pending final discussions with Shah,” said NDBA Secretary Tarun Rana.

The strike, which halted court operations for six days, drew criticism for delaying justice delivery, with over 1,200 cases affected daily in Delhi’s district courts, per court data. The NDBA’s decision reflects cautious optimism, with lawyers awaiting a concrete resolution to ensure the notification aligns with judicial fairness and legal practice.
